What is Marketing?

Marketing is the process of promoting, selling, and distributing a product or service to customers. It involves understanding customer needs, creating valuable offerings, and communicating effectively to encourage purchases. Marketing includes activities like advertising, branding, market research, and customer engagement.

Simple Example:

Imagine you open a lemonade stand.

  • First, you research what people like (sweet, cold lemonade).

  • Then, you set a price that people are willing to pay.

  • You promote it by putting up signs or telling your friends.

  • You sell the lemonade with a friendly smile, encouraging people to return.

This entire process—understanding the customer, creating a product, promoting it, and making sales—is marketing!

Marketing in the Entertainment and Media Business

In the entertainment and media industry, marketing is crucial in attracting audiences, building engagement, and generating revenue. It involves promoting movies, TV shows, music, digital content, live events, and even celebrities. The goal is to create buzz, drive viewership, and maximise profits.

Example:

Movie Marketing – "Avengers: Endgame"

Before its release, Marvel used a multi-channel marketing strategy:

  1. Trailers & Teasers – Released months in advance to build anticipation.

  2. Social Media Campaigns – Engaged fans through hashtags like #AvengersEndgame.

  3. Celebrity Promotions – Actors appeared on talk shows, interviews, and fan events.

  4. Merchandising – Sold Avengers-themed toys, apparel, and collectibles.

  5. Brand Collaborations – Partnered with brands like Coca-Cola and McDonald's for co-branded promotions.

  6. Experiential Marketing – Hosted fan events, premieres, and virtual reality experiences.

This integrated marketing approach ensured the movie became a blockbuster, breaking global box office records.

Similarly, TV shows, streaming platforms (Netflix, Disney+), music labels, and gaming companies use strategic marketing to capture audiences and drive engagement.
